*** If your senator is a member of the Budget Committee please deliver this message: Please support $38.6 billion for International Affairs in the fiscal year 2008 budget resolution.
These funds are critical to meeting the needs and commitments the U.S. has made to fight global hunger, poverty and disease.***

The Senate Budget Committee is meeting this Wednesday, March 13, to consider their draft of the fiscal year 2008 budget. Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) are asking their fellow senators to sign onto a letter to the Budget Committee asking that $38.6 billion be included in the International Affairs Budget. The International Affairs budget includes funding for all international activities of the U.S. government, including the poverty focused development assistance that fights global poverty, hunger and disease. Getting the highest possible budget for International Affairs increases the amount of resources available for poverty focused assistance in later appropriations decisions.

We are expecting to have a similar letter in the House of Representatives soon. Please check back at the Bread for the World Web site within the next few days!

Key points:
* The International Affairs budget makes up only 1.2% of the total federal budget. Less than half of this goes to poverty focused development assistance.
* Long-standing U.S. international programs, which are funded under this portion of the budget, are vital in helping the more than 1 billion people who live on less than $1 a day.
* $38.6 billion in the FY 2008 budget resolution will help us meet the needs and keep the promises we?ve made to fight global hunger, poverty and disease.
* To sign on to the Dodd-Smith letter, your senator should
contact: Josh Blumenfeld in Senator Dodd's office at 224-2823, or Dan Knezevic in Senator Smith's office at 224-3753 by the end of business March 13.

Please Complete this Quickline: no later than 4 PM on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
