Last Friday, Bread members met with Rep. Adam Schiff of California. We called on him to protect programs that benefit poor and hungry people. Norm Thomas, a member of All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA, recently returned from El Salvador where he served as an election observer. He shared with Rep. Schiff about that experience and presented an election handbook created by USAID to facilitate voter participation.
Rep. Schiff was impressed with the resource and emphasized the importance of USAID’s role globally. Pat O’Reilly, president of Friends in Deed and the Ecumenical Council of Pasadena Area Churches, told Rep. Schiff that the number of people coming to the food bank has increased considerably. Just one year ago, 1,700 people were served each week through the program. Now, more than 2,400 people depend on the food pantry for assistance, O'Reilly said.
Overall, the meeting was a success. We thanked Rep. Schiff for advocating for international poverty-focused foreign assistance, and encouraged him to protect such programs as he serves on the House Appropriations Committee.
