Urging our nation's leaders to end hunger

What Do Obama and Romney Have to Say About Hunger and Poverty?

Obama-Romney-Video-Image-smallerNEWThis summer, the Christian leaders comprising the Circle of Protection invited President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney to submit short video statements on how they each plan to provide help and opportunity for hungry and poor people in the United States and around the world. Both candidates agreed to participate.

On Sept. 12, Circle of Protection and Bread for the World will debut these two historic videos.

“Hunger and poverty are so pervasive in this country that the poverty rate is the highest on record in the United States," said Bread for the World President David Beckmann. "This should be an election issue, so we are grateful that the presidential candidates are publicly stating their positions. We are calling on religious leaders and all people of faith to listen carefully to what the candidates have to say and when voting be mindful of the least among us. Voting is a sacred obligation; supporting candidates who have demonstrated their commitment to reducing hunger and poverty is integral to good stewardship.”

The videos will be available for viewing online tomorrow, beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. We invite you to watch the candidate videos, share them via Facebook and Twitter, and continue the conversation on issues of hunger and poverty in the weeks leading up to the November elections.

The least among us include the poor, the elderly, and especially the unborn. Why should we have a Democratic or Republican viewpoint? I think that if we asked the citizens of this great country, we would find many ways to help the hungry: government programs, charity, job creation, and family values in which we take care of our neighbor. All of these solutions are necessary.
